Both teams put a
terrific effort in to make it a very entertaining final in front
of a crowd approaching 420 people at Aldershot Town's Recreation
Ground. The opening ten minutes saw both sides checking each other
out with Camberley creating a couple of chances through a Paul
Dadson header that went wide and a Jason Milletti shot/cross that
the Peter Rapley in the Badshot Lea was forced to tip over the
bar.
On 10 minutes Badshot Lea had a good shout for a penalty when Ben Cobbett chased back to tackle Michael Harper from behind and brought him down. The referee decided that the challenge was just outside the area and awarded a free kick. Harper was in the thick of the action again five minutes later when Paul Dadson slipped whist trying to control the ball in the penalty area. Harper' shot from 8 yards out swung just wide of the far right hand post. Camberley hit back with another chance on 19 minutes, this one falling to John Finnieston who sent a stooping header just wide of the post from a Jason Milletti cross. Badshot Lea went straight up the other end from the goal kick and Harper went close again, trying to lift his shot over Foster but Chris was alert and positioned himself well to catch the ball. With both sides creating chances it was no surprise that goals would be forthcoming. The opening goal of the final finally arrived on 37 minutes when Peter Rapley's long kick was flicked on by Harper for Rob Westell who used his pace to run between the two Camberley centre backs and rifle the ball past Chris Foster's outstretched left hand. Shortly after Chris Foster picked up a leg injury and was unable to complete the half. Fortunately for Camberley, Carl Clayton was on the bench and was able to replace his shortly before the break. Camberley were looking to improve on a below par first half performance and made a double substitution at half time bringing on Martyn Williams and David Clarke for Sam Broadbent and Ben Cobbett and switching from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3. It was a bit of a risk as there would be no more substitutes to cover for injuries. It took a few minutes for Camberley to settle into the new formation and it allowed Badshot Lea's Michael Harper another good chance, with a shot across the face of goal. The ploy looked to be paying dividends when David Clarke held off a defender to get a shot in on 48 minutes, but Peter Rapley made a comfortable save. The ploy did pay off just six minutes into the second half. Dan Ker swung in a free kick from the left hand wing. Martyn WIlliams ran in to challenge for the ball with the keeper and a defender, the ball deflecting off the defender and into the back of the net to level the scores. Badshot Lea looked to hit back immediately and within two minutes they went close with a deep cross from the right wing that eventually found Dan Bailey at the back of the penalty area and his effort forced a fine save from Carl Clayton, low down by the post. The chance served as a warning for Camberley as a technically excellent Badshot Lea side always looked dangerous when attacking. It sparked Camberley into action and they created a number of good chances in succession. On 57 minutes Martyn Williams set up Jason Milletti with a 25 yard effort but it lacked the power to beat Rapley. On 63 minute, David Clarke was put through on the left hand side of the Lea defence but blasted over the bar when most would have put money on him to hit the target. Five minutes later Camberley went even closer when Mitch While ran on to a John Finneston flick on and attempted the left the ball past Rapley but the advancing keeper made an excellent one handed reaction save to deny him. That was quickly followed by an excellent chance for John Finneston who forced another save from Rapley but it would not have counted as the Referees Assistant's flag had been raised for offside. The 73rd minute saw Finneston intelligently find Mitch While unmarked on the right the Badshot Lea defence and he looked certain to test the keeper but he sliced the shot wide of the right hand post. Badshot Lea hit back with three chances in the space of ten second's in a scramble in the Camberley penalty area. Michael Smith, Rob Westall and Michael Harper all had efforts blocked by the bodies of Camberley defenders. Both sides pushed forward, looking for a winner but both defence's were looking solid until the final minute when Camberley could have clinched it, as David Clarke broke through the Badshot Lea defence but fired wide of the left post. Straight from the start of extra time, Michael Harper had the chance to score but sliced his effort to Paul Dadson who launched the ball clear. On 94 minutes John Finneston had a chance for Camberley but with the ball stuck under feet he was unable to get his shot off quickly enough and Rapley was unable to smother the effort. Badshot Lea got the goal they were looking for in the 99th minute, when a similar tactic used for the first goal was repeated. Rapley launched a long kick up field, Michael Smith flicked the ball on with his head to find Michael Harper, making a diagonal run, and Harper fired past Clayton. The lead lasted just four minutes as Camberley broke away on the right wing and Mitch While's attempted cross did not find it's intended destination as the ball struck a Badshot Lea hand and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Tom McGarry stepped up to confidently send the keeper the wrong way and level the game at 2-2. Right on the stroke of half time in extra time, Camberley had a great chance to take the lead for the first time on the night when Jason Milletti beat a defender and slide the ball across for Mitch While who somehow scooped the ball over an open goal from six yards out. Into the second period of extra time and on 111 minutes Badshot Lea took the lead for a third time. Brad Smith this time getting the better of the Camberley defence on the right hand side and then planting the ball with force between Carl Clayton and his near post. Within a minute Badshot Lea should have sealed it as James Hinchin crossed for Michael Harper, who had one defender on the line to beat but struck his shot against the crossbar from 8 yards out. It looked as if it could have been all over for Camberley but they did not give up and in the 118th minute, a ball from the right wing was flicked on by the head of John Finneston and Joe Paris was on hand to win the race for the ball and toe poke the ball past the keeper for 3-3. The game therefore was to be decided on penalties. Badshot Lea went first with Brad Smith firing them into the lead. Tom McGarry stepped up to level. Nick Sowden, who had an excellent match for Badshot Lea, stepped up for the second penalty but was unable to convert as Clayton made a fine save to his left. John Finneston stepped up to confidently slot home his penalty to put Camberley in front. From then on the penalties were all perfectly executed. Michael Harper, Jason Short and Rob Westall all scoring for Badshot Lea. Martyn Williams and Jason Milletti converted for Camberley to take it to 4-4. It was left for Joe Paris to take Camberley's fifth penalty and he confidently struck it into the bottom left hand corner to win the Cup for Camberley. Badshot Lea put in a composed fluent performance with a team made up of 21 and 22 year old's and will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with in the next few years. We wish them all the success next season. |
