Camberley had an excellent first half
and had they taken their chances, could have been three up at the
break. It took less than a minute to create the first chance which
fell to Dan Ker, just inside the penalty area but the keeper was
well positioned to save. Again we could have scored after four
minutes with an excellent move involving Dan Ker and Ben Cobbett
on the left side of the field that resulted in Cobbett crossing to
the back post for John Finneston to head the ball back across the
goal where Paul Dadson narrowly missed the ball with his head. Any
contact would surely have resulted in the opening goal. As it
happened we only had to wait three more minutes for the opener.
Following another Camberley attack the Banstead defence failed to
clear and Ben Cobbett won the ball back on the left edge of the
penalty area and crossed for Alex Jeffers, who had slipped his
marker, to volley the ball past Mark Rouse in the Banstead goal.
After a couple of half chances, Camberley went close again on 22 minutes. John Finneston, who has been denied a goal by a couple of excellent saves in recent matches, was denied again when he met an Alex Jeffers cross with a powerful header, but Rouse managed to parry the ball away as he dived to his right. On 27 minutes Finneston became provider for Jeffers. He looked to be through himself but a heavy first touch took him wide but he managed to control and lay the ball into the path of Jeffers, who unfortunately dragged his shot wide of the left post.
Finneston heads for goal (left) - Campbell equalises for Banstead Athletic (right) Over the next ten minutes Camberley had two further chances but Ben Cobbett fired wide of the left post and Dan Ker headed over from a McGarry cross. Banstead hit back with a chance for Taylor Mollatt but he sliced wide. Banstead’s first and only chance on target throughout the first half came a minute before the break. Camberley lost possession in midfield and Banstead broke down the right wing. The resulting cross was blocked by Paul Dadson but not controlled and Marcus Campbell, the Premier Division’s top scorer, was in like a flash to snap up the chance to wrong foot Carl Clayton to equalise.
Team Captain Paul Dadson (left), Midfield dynamo Danny Ker (centre left), Goalscorer Alex Jeffers (centre right) and fellow striker John Finneston (right) The goal was a blow for Camberley and resulted in Banstead coming out for the second half in confident mood. Russell Banyard fired over from 20 yards for the visitors, to set the tone for the second half. Camberley had a chance to regain the lead on 54 minutes but Sam Broadbent was unable to keep his shot down. Camberley had to thank Carl Clayton for keeping the scores level on the hour when a corner found Chris Zammitt running on to te ball. It looked destined for the back of the net but a superb reaction save saw Clayton somehow divert it over. The save was so good he was even congratulated by Zammitt with a pat on the head and a handshake. Clayton was in action again on 67 minutes as he turned an awkward Russell Townsend free kick round the post. With ten minutes left on the clock, Camberley had another chance from a Finneston cross but substitute, Rob Lance was unable to keep his header down as he was under pressure. On 82 minutes, Banstead thought they had scores the winner as substitute Adam Cheadle headed home a corner but it was ruled out for a push by Cheadle as he attacked the ball. The game then saw both sides tighten up in defence as neither wanted to lose the point they had. |
