Dorking felt they should have had
something out of the game and perhaps they were right. In recent
years we have lost a few matches to Dorking, because we did not
take our chances when they came along. This year it happened to
them. Craig Duffell had two chances early in the match to open the
scoring but fired both of them wide of the left hand post.
Camberley had to wait until the 12th minute before having their
first chance. It fell to Mitch While following a misplaced pass
from the Dorking defence. Mitch, like Craig Duffell at the other
end, firing inches wide of the left post. The next 15 minutes saw
both sides looking for a goal without seriously troubling either’s
defences. Then on 26 minutes, came the breakthrough.
Mitch While attempted to turn his marker on the edge of the Dorking penalty area and was tripped. Nick White stepped up to take the free kick and with inch perfect precision, found the oldest player on the park attempting an acrobatic flying header. Paul Dadson, the old fox in the box, made excellent contact and guided the ball back across the wrong footed young keeper Mark Fox, and into the back of the net. 1-0 to Camberley. They say you are most vunerable just after scoring and Dorking almost proved it, Duffell forcing Clayton to save with his legs. Both sides had chances just before the break , Duffell again for Dorking, this time firing wide and for Camberley, Ben Cobbett crossing for Mitch While but his header only found the arms of the keeper. Ten minutes into the second half, John Swift, over stated his opinion of a refereeing decision and talked himself into the referee’s note book. Within minutes, one of the Dorking defenders had a pushing match with him after spitting in his face. The referee had no option but to send Swift off for his reaction but because he did not see the spitting offence take place, the Dorking defender stayed on the park with just a booking for the push and shove. Unfortunately this put Camberley on the back foot and Dorking dominated the final 25 minutes. Dave Iliffe had a header go a few inches over and then a few minute later had another header when in a good position, which was more danger to the corner flag than the back of the net. Camberley resorted to counter attacking and could have had a second goal on 72 minutes when a Nick White corner was headed away as far as Jason Milletti who forced a good save to his left by Fox in the Dorking goal. Fears of a repeat of the Bedfont collapse played on a few supporters minds, but the Camberley defence were solid enough restricting the Dorking chances to efforts from outside the penalty area. Kevin Burgess, Dorking’s hat-trick hero from the week before, volleyed inches over and Dave Illife wasted the final chance, poking the ball past an advancing Clayton but also wide of the post.
