Camberley left the Leg
of Mutton Field slightly disappointed after losing a
two goal lead and the chance to close the gap on our
rivals above us. Cobham started the game well and
took the game to us from the start, creating two
good chances for Steve Mesher and Marcus Rose, both
of which were off target. On 6 minutes, Camberley
turned the table on their hosts and an excellent
through ball put Ben Cobbett in with a chance. His
first effort produced a good save from Cobham
custodian Jay Gindre. The ball came straight back to
him and Gindre pulled of and even more impressive
point blank save to deny Cobbett again. The ball was
only cleared as far as Adam Galvin, 25 yards out.
Galvin hit it back through a crowd of players and it
looked as if Gindre had it covered but the ball hit
a divot resulting in an irregular bounce that took
the ball past the keeper and into the back of the
net. On 9 minutes, the traveling Camberley faithful
thought it was 2-0 when Mitch While diverted a Ben
Cobbett corner into the net but as player and
supporter alike celebrated, the referee's assistants
flag had been raised to show a hand had been used.
An irregular bounce at the other end on 13 minutes
almost saw Cobham level things with a shot from Mark
Knight that leapt up in front of the diving Clayton
but he was able to get enough of a touch to divert
the ball onto the post. It did become 2-0 on 20
minutes when a well placed corner saw Rob Dixon rise
unmarked at the back post to head home another Ben
Cobbett corner. Cobham, over the past few weeks,
have shown that they have a fighting spirit and like
the week before at Sandhurst, they set about clawing
back a two goal deficit. Tom Davis went close with a
shot inches over the bar before they pulled a goal
back on 29 minutes. The move was started by ex-Krooner
Duncan Evans who played an intelligent ball down the
left touchline for Marcus Rose to drive a low cross
into the box. Carl Clayton got a hand to the ball in
an effort to divert the ball to safety but only
succeeded in diverting it into the path of Nick
Tooley, who hammered the ball home. Both sides had
chances to extend the score before the break.
Camberley had Martyn Williams evade the offside trap
but good defending by Nicky Andrews saw the ball
taken off his toe as he prepared to shoot and soon
after Mitch While mis-hit a shot into the arms of
the keeper as he attempted a lob at goal. For Cobham
Steve Mesher, whose physical presence and pace
caused problems for most of the day, had a shot from
20 yards fly over the bar.
Camberley were forced to make a substitution at half time, bringing Danny Harrison on for the influential Tom McGarry. Centre backs Harrison and Dadson though performed well and were able to keeper Mesher and Rose at bay as Cobham started the second half as they started the first. The closest Cobham came in the early stages of the half was a chance from Davis that Clayton did well to tip over and from the resulting corner, a header from Tooley went wide. Camberley had the chance re-establish a two goal advantage on 68 minutes when a cross from Jamie Hoppitt deflected off Andrews and ran right across the face of the Cobham goal but there was no striker following up for Camberley. A minute later, Mitch While broke through the offside trap and beat the keeper to the ball with his head but it was not on target. Martyn Williams followed up but saw his effort at a stretch hit the post. The referee's assistant then raised a flag to give him offside which was a strange decision as he had made a run from behind While after the ball had been knocked the ball past the keeper. The final 20 minutes saw Camberley tire on a long grassed wet pitch and Cobham came more to the fore. Mesher had an effort blocked by a last ditch Dadson tackle but their pressure paid off on 79 minutes when Ryan Anderson sent a curling shot past a crowd of players and past an unsighted Carl Clayton and just inside the left hand upright. Mark Knight almost stole it for the hosts in the 89th minute but Clayton was able to parry the shot away to safety.
