After what had been a successful week, point wise, for Camberley in the league, they put in a disappointing performance in the F.A. Carlsberg Vase and went tumbling out to Sussex Division 3 side Haywards Heath Town.
Hayweards Heath had the opening chance on 4 minutes with a Terry Gacias shot that went a yard or two wide of the left hand upright. Camberley then pressed forward and had three good chances in the opening 15 minutes. The first came on 6 minutes when Adam Galvin's lob forward almost found Rob Dixon but the keeper was alert at managed to pluck the ball out of the air before Dixon could make contact. Dixon was involved agaim soon after, connecting with Nick White's corner but saw his downward header cleared off the line by Simon Bristow. Another corner caaused bother for the Haywards Heath defence on 14 minutes, this time Paul Dadson connecting but his header went wide of the right hand post.
Camberley seemed too casual at the back at time and paid for it on 24 minutes when Tom McGarry was dispossessed by Simon McMenemy and his clinically fired home with just Carl Clayton to beat. Camberley almost levelled things five minutes later when Martyn WIlliams flicked on a pass to Dean Thomas but his placed prod at goal went the wron sode of the post with the keeper rooted to the spot. From here things went a little downhill for Camberley. Passes along the ground became long ball, a style which we are not good at playing, and we did not close the opposition down, like we did in the Sandhurst game a few days earlier, and allowed our opponents time on the ball, which gave them confidence. Adam Burton went close to a second for Haywards Heath on 33 minutes with an effoer that went just inches wide. Camberley had to wait until the 38th minute for their first shot on target which Adam Galvin fired into the arms of the keeper.
We only had to wait eight minutes of the second half for the second goal of the game but it did not go the way that we hoped. Like several times before Camberley lost possession of the ball in midfield and we caught on the break by Simon Bristow who raced unmarked onto a cross field ball and finished excellently on the run with a shot into the top left hand corner of the Camberley net. In order to attempt a quick reply, manager Paul Barry made a double substitution with Mitch While and James Goff comming on for Wayne Sale and Jamie Hoppitt but to no avail. Haywards Heath, highly confident now, could possibly have extended th score on the hour when Terry Gracias shot just wide of the post and soon after, Rickie Mitchell found himself through with just Clayton to beat but chipped his attempted lob stright into Clayton's arms. Sandwiched between those two chances, Sam Broadbent had an effort for the Krooners but he fired wide of the right post.
The Camberley faithful were looking for a rousing finish from the Camberley lads but it never came. Too many misplaced passes, too much standing off the opponents and what seemed like a lack of enthusiasm for a battling performance prevailed. Only one further chance of note came for Camberley, a one-two between Martyn Williams and Dean Thomas resulting in an fine shot by Williams, but once again it flew wide of the post. |
