13th September 2006 : F.A. Youth Cup Preliminary Round

A sizable crowd of just under 70 witnessed an entertaining cup-tie at Krooner Park which neither side deserved to lose. At the end of the day it is the visitors, Chertsey Town, who progress to the next round.

Both sides had a chance to open the scotring in the opening five minutes. Chertsey going close through a shot by James Hennessy and Camberley through last week's hat-trick hero David Clarke. On 7 minutes Camberley took the lead following good work on the right wing involving Hadley Paine and Nick Brand and resulting in Hadley Paine cutting inside along the edge of the penalty area and letting fly with a spectacular shot into the top left hand corner of the net. Chertsey almost levelled things within three minutes as Max Springnall fired across the face of the Camberley goal and wide. Camberley then had a couple of chances that saw David Clarke miss out to an excellent tackle by a defender as he tried to take the ball past the Chertsey keeper and soon after Bryan Thompson, cutting in from the left forcing a fine save from Will Taylor.

After 20 minutes Chertsey started to gain more possession and went close twice through Hennessy with efforts that cleared the crossbar. On 37 minutes Chertsey's possession told when a cross field ball was well taken down with a single touch by substitute Zac Dadzie and fired low into the bottom right hand corner of the net with his second touch to level the scores. Five minutes later Chertsey then snatched the lead when a corner from the left was met with a looping header by team captain Scott Harrison and it found the gap between keepers hand and crossbar.

The second half started with Chertsey looking to extend their lead and bothMax Springnall and James Hennessy had efforts saved by Camberley keeper Kris Hatton. As the half wore on Camberley slowly built up pressure in the effort to grab an equaliser. Nick Brand had an early effort fly over the crossbar and then on 67 minutes David Clarke had a goal disallowed for offside. With Camberley pressing forward, gaps were left in midfield and at the back and Chertsey, with an abundance of pace, threatened several times. Their best chance of extending the lead saw Hennessy head goalwards only to see the ball hacked off the line by a Camberley defender. On 75 minutes Camberley went close again, Clarke forcing an excellent save from Talyor, to deny him the equaliser. In the dying seconds Camberley had a great chance following a flick on from Chris Bazen but Jason Reeves shot swung just wide of the post.

Congratulations to Chertsey on their win and we wish them the best of luck in the next round
