An entertaining first half saw both
sides create a number of chances but did not produce a goal.
Camberley started as they have in several recent matches, slowly
and this allowed the hosts, Chessington & Hook, to have the
best of the play in the opening period. Neil Wicks twice using his
pace and strength to strike shots across the face of the Camberley
goal. On 16 minutes Chessington & Hook thought they had opened
the scoring when Rhys North knocked the ball through to Darren
Fitra to volley past Chris Foster in the Camberley goal but the
Referee's Assistant already had his flag up to indicate offside.
Camberley came more into the game after 20 minutes and created a
good chance for Tom McGarry whose low drive almost beat Matt Mann
in the Chessington & Hook goal, who got down well to turn the
shot round the post for a corner. Soon after Adam Galvin's through
ball saw Mitch While escape his marker to fire across goal and
just wide of the far post. Within a minute Darren Firta went close
with a header at the other end. Camberley followed up with three
more good chances. Paul Dadson combined well with Mitch While to
create a chance that Paul Dadson sent flying just over the bal at
full strength. Dave Hancock was the next provider for a Paul
Dadson chance on the half hour but this time Dadson's header found
the arms of Mann. It was Adam Galvin's turn to shoot on 34
minutes, sending a shot from 20 yards just over the bar.
Chessington & Hook always looked dangerous with their pace up
front and it earned them a number of free kicks in the Camberley
half. On of those free kicks, struck by Wicks almost found its way
into the Camberley net but Chris Foster took no chances to
scramble it away from just under the crossbar. Camberley
retaliated by going straight up the other end and rattling the
crossbar with a shot from Mitch While. Before the break neither
side could break the deadlock before the half time break. David
Hancock tried for Camberley but fired over and there were chances
for Lee Innes and Rhys North for Chessington & Hook, both of
which did not trouble the keeper too much.
The decisive moments of the match came within three minutes of the restart. It was almost as if Camberley had left their concentration in the changing room. Twice in the space of a minute Neil Wicks sped through the Camberley backline on the left hand side and fired across Chris Foster in the Camberley goal. The first effort went in off the inside of the post to give the home side the lead and forth five seconds later the second was even more accurate to go inside the post to give Chessington a 2-0 lead. Camberley tried to hit back immediately with a driven Tom McGarry cross that just missed the boot of Mitch While as it flashed across goal. Chessington & Hook, made more confident by the two quick goals then had the better of the play for the following 25 minutes restricting Camberley to only a few chances. Paul Dadson had a downward header saved on 61 minutes and Mitch While shot wide. Chessington & Hook went closde to adding another goal with chances for Neil Wicks, Rhys North and substitute Mark Flanaghan, who put his effort into the Camberley side-netting. In an effort to change things, manager Paul Barry switched the formation from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 and for a few moments it didn't look as if it was going to work as Rhys North broke through but Chris Foster was equal to his shot. The change in formation saw Camberley push forward in search of goals and David Hancock went close after James Goff rolled a cleverly worked free kick into his path but shot was straight at the keeper on 83 minutes. On 87 minutes Sam Broadbent went on a surging run into the Chessington & Hook penalty area and was tripped by Danny Heath. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Paul Dadson stepped up to take the spot kick and Matt Mann threw himself to his right to save but the referee's assistant judged that he had encroached off his line before the ball was struck and the penalty had to be retaken. Tom McGarry stepped up to take the retake and slotted the ball home into the left hand corner. Camberley continued to press for the ball but in the remaining couple of minutes Chessington & Hook managed to hold on to possession well in the corners to ensure they ended the game with all three points.
